The $10 Women's Workout Prop – Fit Training Blog for Women 40, 50 and Beyond

Want to stun your friends? Tell them you are doing a pole workout.

Yep, for a real. Look no further than your local hardware or big box store for a really cheap workout prop. You can buy PVC pipe (lightweight plastic tube) or even a wooden dowel – (I recommend minimum 1 ½ or2” diameter) for very little money and you’ll reap great rewards.

These hardware items, normally used for plumbing or hanging up clothes in a closet have cool fitness uses like:

  • Improving your posture. Nothing helps your upward stance more than paying attention to standing up straight; placing the pipe or dowel lengthwise across your spine during exercises will ensure that you are positioning your spine in proper alignment during your workouts.

  • Improving your mobility. If you run through those barbell exercises with a very light weight pipe, pole or dowel, you can safely practice what it feels like to use a full range of motion.

  • Improving your stretch. OK, who stretches enough? Right. A women’s workout without stretching is like a putting on your makeup without mascara- not quite complete. Using your new favorite pole as a long lever gives you the chance to stretch beyond your usual motion and experience a good sideways or rotational stretch with a prop. It’s an easy way to increase your motion safely and without dumbbells or other resistance besides your body weight.

  • Improving your core strength. Yay! You just love your belly, right? Ha! Well, holding a pole, pipe or dowel above your head during exercises like squats, lunges and heel raises changes your center of gravity just enough to force that core (your mushy middle) to engage to keep you stable.

  • Improving your chances of looking like a fit pole dancer. OK, stop laughing! Really, ladies, have you seen a real pole dancer? They are gymnastic marvels whose body is rock hard.

Women who workout not only look better, but feel better about themselves. Isn’t that worth a quick trip to the hardware store today? Need more in home exercises that you can perform safely and get real results? Give me a call at 203.877.5270.
