How to get where you want to go in your Fitness Plan

You won’t get to where you want to go if you only travel on sunny days.
I saw this anonymous quote recently and smiled in its truthful simplicity. For many of you your travels may have been through tumultuous storms not only a cloudy day or two, but the message remains the same.
You have got to move through troubled times to get to the other side.
A fellow student and Ovarian cancer survivor in my yoga class and I had a conversation around this very topic today. She shared, thinking back to the midst of her surgery and chemotherapy, that just getting out of the bed was a momentous goal. She gave herself credit for doing that one thing.
But today, here she is, sans bandana and with a full head of hair, doing the downward dog pose on the beach on a glorious summer morning. She got there by getting up from bed those days that were the stormiest.
How can you apply the essence of this message to your personal fitness plan? Move as much as you can when you feel your best, whether it’s in the morning or in the late hours of the night. Take the time to stretch and breathe mindfully the times when physical activity seems out of the question, but reach for your loftier goals as you get stronger.
Don’t have a fitness plan? It’s OK; it’s a new thing for many! Talk to your doctor about your abilities to walk, and begin a simple strength program- don’t worry about weights, just use good old isometric exercises like tightening your biceps muscles or getting up from your chair without relying on the arms.
Start by taking it slow, but make the move to exercise daily. It will help you travel on many sunny days ahead.
