Don't Slip! - Fit Training Blog for Women 40, 50 and Beyond

Falling is no fun, whether you are 4 or 40- but it's alot worse if you are a bit older and it could land you in the hospital.

The Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging reports that nationally, falls were the leading cause of non-fatal injuries for those 65 and older. Falls corresponded to 800,000 hospitalizations and 2.8 million emergency department (ED) visits in 2014.

That’s a hospitalization every 40 seconds- an Emergency Room

visit every 11 seconds. WOW!

With icy, snowy conditions here in the Northeast, falling is a fear many can relate to. Can you?

Here are three ways to prevent falls throughout the year- whether inside or outside of your home.

1. Keep things tidy. Once of the major reasons for in home falls are trip hazards. A pair of sneakers left in the hall or a throw rug on a wood floor can all cause you to take a spill. When walking with bags or even a load of laundry, be certain you can see the space in front of you. Step carefully!

2. Exercise. Exercising can help prevent falls as it makes/keeps your muscles strong and flexible, and helps you retain/improve balance no matter how old you are. Balancing on one foot, then when comfortable, close your eyes while you balance and unassisted chair sits (no arms, only using your muscles) are easy ways for you to improve your strength and avoid trips and falls.

3 Avoid the rush. When in icy areas, don't take the shortcut off the plowed paths and wear winter footwear, not your fluffy socks out even to grab the mail. Bring your dress shoes/high heels with you and change at the office/event. Step small and keep your center of balance under you.
