Acorns & Action - Fit Training Blog for Women 40, 50 and Beyond
Whew! In the northeast, squirrels are scurrying around collecting what seems to be (in my yard) millions of acorns.
Without taking action, those long tailed critters would be in big trouble come winter. They can't sit in their squirrel sized recliners and watch the other squirrels scamper in the yard- they have to be in action for themselves.
I got to thinking, humans could take a big lesson from the industrious, clever and active squirrels.
Their message is "be prepared." It should be your mantra, too.
Here are some suggestions inspired by the squirrel:
1. Select only the best acorns and enjoy them with gusto. Do you ever notice that squirrels reject lots of acorns before they determine which is the best for them? Humans can do that too- not just grabbing whatever you see; instead, evaluate, study and then decide which food is best for your body and your situation at the moment. Fuel well and you'll be well.
2. Run, scamper, play! Squirrels have a fun fest in the autumn, running through the leaves, chasing each other and figuring out ingenious ways to get into your bird feeder. Take a hint from them and get out of your chair and move more. You too can play in the colorful leaves as you rake them (manually) or enjoy the falling leaves during a walk in the park.
3. Prepare for winter. Squirrels are getting themselves ready for winter, and you should think about that, too. Think about the darker days and stormy weather that might drive a bad bout of cabin fever. Don't let the winter doldrums turn you into a couch potato seeking comfort food - that will only slow you down in the spring. Instead, decide on some in-home workout options, engage a personal trainer or fitness buddy to glide through winter without extra belly baggage.
