We all do it, huh? Strive, fall, get up, brush off and do it over all again.

At least, that's what the peak performers do.

When you want to make life changes in the way you eat, how much or how you move, or other healthful self care activities, it's often not a direct route to sustained success.

Here are three ways to strive with strength, feel good on the way and get what you want done:

1. Don't let self defeating thoughts fill up your head. You aren't a failure, no matter how many times you have tried and fallen a bit short on your goals. Open your heart to loving yourself and apply the same encouragement you would for your best friend, "I know you can do this!", "Just dust yourself off and do better tomorrow", and "Rome wasn't built in a day!"

2. Separate the negative friend talk from what's positive for you. Others will always want to weigh in on what you want to do. People handle change differently, and believing that everyone around you is on board to support your lifestyle behavior changes is not realistic. Someone likes you heavy, or wants to sit on the sofa all night, or perhaps they see you in a role you have held in the past. It's OK, you get to choose what advice you listen to- just remember not everyone has your best intentions in mind. Perhaps they like the "old you" for their reasons that may not coincide with yours.

3. Don't get tripped up about "how" it's going to work. Most important changes happen with intentional action, not always a detailed list of steps. Yes, it's critical to take strides toward the "new you" but many changes are not exactly linear. Sometimes life unfolds like beautiful rose petals. Be open to a circuitous route to your goal, smile and keep moving!
