Do You Get Hangry? - Fit Training Blog for Women 40, 50 and Beyond
I heard the term for the first time last week. Hangry- The Urban Dictionary defines it as:
When you are so hungry that your lack of food causes you to become angry, frustrated or both. An amalgam of hungry and angry invented to describe that feeling when you get when you are out at a restaurant and have been waiting over an hour to get the meal that you have ordered.
As I looked into it more, I decided that I can see the relevance of being super hungry and grumpy or short tempered- so let me ask you... Have you ever been Hangry?
Not everyone has a trigger that makes them more like a lion than a lamb when they are starving. Here are some reasons behind "hangry":
Everything you eat is digested into simple sugars (i.e. glucose), amino acids and fatty acids so your body can fuel itself. As time passes, the amount of nutrients decline and if your blood glucose levels fall far enough your brain perceives it as life threatening and you may find it hard to concentrate or your thoughts can be confused.
Along with glucose levels dropping, you may become hangry when your body releases stress hormones during attempts to regulate your hormones when not enough fuel is present. That "fight or flight" response might cause you to shout out when you are normally calm and collected.
There are also neuropeptides that regulate anger and aggression. People with higher levels of neuropeptide Y in their cerebrospinal fluid also tend to demonstrate more aggression.
Hunger is, at its basic level, a survival mechanism and the easiest way to deal with it is to eat before you get to famished hungry. Make your choice a nutritionally dense one, not fast quick fix sugar or simple carb snack which can have you crashing down fast.
