Play Offense, Not Defense! Fit Training Blog for Women 40, 50 and Beyond
Willpower. It’s a term we use frequently and one that has much passion around it in the world of health and fitness.
The dictionary defines willpower as the ability to control yourself: strong determination that allows you to do something difficult (such as to lose weight or quit smoking).
Other words you might use are self-control, discipline and resolve. Roy Baumeister and John Tierney in their book Willpower suggest those applying willpower give themselves enough time to finish projects, take their car to the shop before it breaks down, stay away from all you can eat buffets. They say these folks play OFFENSE instead of DEFENSE.
Huh. Have you ever really thought of willpower that way? Use this powerful energy to avoid crises vs. avoiding them.
Here are 3 ways to avoid a health and fitness crisis and help your Willpower Win:
Pack healthy snacks. When your hunger bell goes off, no matter how much willpower you try to employ, that fast food drive through lane is calling you. Have nuts, hardboiled eggs, fruit and veggies cut up and ready to roll when you are in a rush.
Schedule extra time for everything. Have you ever noticed that no matter what, your chores, projects and assignments take at least 20% more time to complete? Why not add that time up front to give yourself a chance to do a great job or prepare a wonderful meal and enjoy the accomplishment?
Get that workout on your schedule. You know you need to move more, but what gets cut from the list time and time again? Yep, that workout. Mastering tip #2 can help you get your workout in – even if you chunk it up to pre and post work, or mid day and evening segments.
Help your willpower support you just like your battery keeps your Smartphone humming and you’ll see a nice improvement in your physical and emotional health.
