What about your hair? Do you even THINK that your hair can get sun damaged? Well, do you notice your hair naturally gets lighter when exposed to the sun for long periods of time?
That natural “summer highlight” is actually oxidation- What really happens is that the hair shaft is affected by the sun and can’t retain your natural (er… or even not quite natural!) pigment.
Here are five ways to decrease sun damage so you don’t fry your follicles!
Moisturize! - use a good moisturizing product like a leave in conditional to protect your hairs protein (called Keratin).
Hats On! - A cute hat is not only a fashion accessory, but it can combat sun damage to your hair- wider the brim, the more complete the protection.
UV Protect!- Yep, just like your exposed skin, your exposed hair will benefit from an SPF 25+ You can even use your same skin protection spray by diluting with water and transferring to another spray bottle.
Eliminate the Lemons! I know, I used to spray lemon juice on my hair too, back in the day to encourage the summer streaks, yikes! Lemon, alcohol or any peroxide based protects simply dry out your hair making it look like straw.
Wrap it up! Using a lovely scarf and channeling your inner 1950’s diva or piling your long hair into a pouf or bun can dramatically decrease your sun exposure.
Having fun in sun shouldn’t include a case of sun burn, to your skin or your scalp.
