"Exercise keeps me young and healthy. My muscles love to move. I am alive person." -- Louise Hay

Message from the President:

Summer is moving right along, are you? Why not take these lazy summer days to review your New Year’s Resolutions about weight loss and exercise. Yes, I know that 2011 is months away- and that’s exactly the point! Begin you lifestyle changes now and enjoy the holidays without guilt!

Take some time to reassess your food choices and daily strategies to include better nutrition and more physical activity while the days are long and warmer.

Think about how you can commit to a better eating plan before holiday comfort food tempts you. If you find that your intentions are good, but you struggle with exercise, why not purchase a set of BANGLZ for you and your friends and set up a buddy check in system?

Here are 4 rules for your buddy system:

  • Agree to wear your Banglz on certain days/times (start out slow if you are new to exercise!)

  • Determine a time to meet and take a walk together using your BANGLZ. (Swing those arms!)

  • Encourage each other to add variety to the workout

  • Work on keeping the friendship strong

  • Don't talk each other out of fitting fitness IN!

Have fun, move more and… enjoy the rest of the summer!

Exercise Tidbits of Research

The Importance Of Exercise For Men

A 10-year study of almost 1,300 men, average age 52 years, was conducted by researchers in Finland. At the outset of the study, all of the men were free of cardiovascular disease, lung disease, and cancer. At the ten-year mark, it was found that those who had performed well on a maximum oxygen uptake test (VO2 Max) and could exercise longer were more likely to be alive at the end of the study. The sad news: the men who had performed poorly were 3 times more likely to die from any cause.

The State of Terminal Denial

In the ‘60’s many baby boomers were known for their activism: civil rights, peace rallies, gay rights, environmental initiatives. Today, as the boomers move through their 50’s and begin hitting 60 years of age, they’re distinguishing themselves, in part, by their apathy—particularly with respect to one dangerous fact of later life: rampant cardiovascular disease (CVD).

According to a new study conducted for the American Heart Association, the boomers are aware of the problem, understand the underlying causes, and are familiar with preventive courses of action, but, for the most part, are doing nothing about it.

Only 47% of the survey respondents said that they eat a healthy diet, and only 55% reported that they exercise more than three times a week, but, ironically, 87% said they’re optimistic about enjoying a healthy future, and virtually all of them (97%) believe that they’ll remain active after they retire.

The disturbing facts of the matter, however, are these: 63% of boomers are overweight or obese, and 13 million of those ages 45-54 already have some form of cardiovascular disease.

Ladies… Are YOU Dense?

Breast Density… know this best kept secret
By Special Guest Writer Dr. Nancy Cappello

I ate healthy, exercised daily, had yearly mammograms, and had no first degree relative with breast cancer, yet in 2004, I was diagnosed with stage 3c breast cancer. When I asked my breast surgeon why the mammograms failed to find my cancer, she replied," Nancy, you have dense breast tissue". This was the first time I was told about dense breast tissue and the limitations of mammograms to find cancer in women with dense breast tissue.

In 2004 when I received the tragic news of my late-stage breast cancer diagnosis, I was physically and mentally fit. Even though I was exhausted from aggressive chemotherapy treatments, I fought to remain active. I considered exercise another vital tool in my treatment protocol which would give me added benefits in my recovery from this serious diagnosis. It was during treatment that I conveyed the story of my advanced stage diagnosis to my state senator. I informed her that breast density is one of the strongest predictors of the failure of mammography screening to detect cancer and that adding an ultrasound screening increases detection of breast cancers that are small and node negative.

My advocacy has been instrumental in the passage of two laws in CT; one for insurance companies to cover whole breast ultrasound as a supplement to the mammogram and beginning October 1, 2009 a woman's breast density will be included in her mammography report. Women will now be able to make an informed decision about further screening tools for the early detection of breast cancer.

In 2008, I launched a website (www.areyoudense.org) and started an organization (Are You Dense, Inc.) a public charity.

I continue to exercise daily and take every opportunity to be active. My weight has not changed since my diagnosis and my last two bone density exams came back "within normal limits" in spite of the side effects of the medication which cause weight gain and bone loss. This is attributed to a healthy and active lifestyle.
